
STUDENT GOVERNANCE
Students in the school and the Hospital exist as a body. It is important therefore to have a system of governance within this body for the following purposes:
- Student leaders should represent all students, regardless of background, race, ethnicity, gender, religion, class etc.
- There should be no tribal or political groupings
OBJECTIVES OF STUDENT LEADERSHIP
- To give leadership and direction to the students both at the school and at the Hospital
- Distribute responsibilities among the students thus giving them opportunities to take initiative and also to critique
- Act as a liaison between students and the administration
- Co-ordinate recreational activities among the students
- To co-ordinate various activities of the student body
ELECTION OF STUDENT LEADERS
- Students’ leaders shall be elected every year
- The students will be allowed to campaign peacefully for the vacant positions
- Elections shall be held through secret ballot
- All the genders shall be represented with no single gender taking more than two thirds of the positions
- Candidates should have at least six months before completion of their training to be eligible for elections
PERIOD OF SERVICE
- The student leaders will serve for one year term
- Student leaders can be re-elected but cannot serve for more than two terms
SCOPE OF STUDENT LEADERSHIP
The student leaders will be oversee the following activities:
- Students’ welfare
- Sports and entertainment
- Class affairs
- Corporate Social Responsibilities
- Academic symposiums and professional organisations meetings
- Clubs and projects
RESPONSIBILITY OF STUDENT LEADERS
CLASS REPRESENTATIVES
The student leaders will be oversee the following activities:
- Collect class keys from the Principal’s office at the beginning of a class
- Session and ensure these are returned at the end of session
- Ensure classroom is locked at end of class, lights switched off and windows closed
- Refer class challenges/concerns to class lecturer
- Be aware and report to class lecturer any students absent from class
- Be a link between students and school administration
STUDENT WELFARE REPRESENTATIVE
- To report the illness of any student to the Principal
- To assure that regulations applying to training process are fair and upheld
- To cooperate in maintaining a unified and well-ordered atmosphere in the School
- To see that any equipment or facilities needing to be repaired or replaced is reported to the school administration
- Take good care of resources available for learning at the School
- Work with school patrons/linkage persons in planning and execution of other social events
SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT REPRESENTATIVE
- Organise for sports and entertainment activities
- Identify venues and plan trips for team building activities
- Maintain an inventory of sports items/equipment
OVERALL STUDENT LEADER
- Acts as the leader of the student body
- Chair student meetings and present the minutes to the Principal or Deputy Principal
- Report general student matters to the Deputy Principal or the Principal
- Receive communication directed to the student body from the school administration
CHANNELS OF COMMUNICATING GRIEVANCES
- Any student grievances should be taken to the proper person
- A class representative is selected by each class to handle non-academic challenges/ concerns
- The representative will forward the complaint to the class lecturer
- Academic issues shall be handled by the Class Lecturer/Principal as appropriate. While in Clinicals the Clinical Instructor handles it
- Overall student representatives will also channel grievances to the Deputy Principal or the Principal
- Suggestion and other grievances can also be channeled through documentation in the students meetings
N/B: Health Service falls under the Essential Service Act, which forbids any type of strike. Any involvement in a strike will result to a summary dismissal.
STUDENT MEETINGS
- The students shall inform the administration of their intention to hold a meeting
- Meetings shall be held within the school premises
- The meetings shall be held in an orderly manner
- Ensure that at least one third of the students is represented in the meeting
- The students shall hold monthly meetings
- The Deputy Student Leader will take minutes
- The typed minutes will be forwarded to the Principal within 24 hours of holding such a meeting
HOSTEL CONDUCT
- The student is expected to cater for their own accommodation, however they shall be linked by the institution to nearby accommodation facilities
- Students will be expected to uphold utmost professional conduct that depict the profession and the institutional image
- Where outlined, the student will be expected to follow laid down regulations of the facility in which they are being accommodated
DINING HALL CONDUCT
Students are expected to cater for their own meals. However, the school will provide tea at 10:00am and 4:00pm. The School will also facilitate lunch within the premise at a cost.
Students are expected to adhere to scheduled meal times to avoid inconvenicences. They are also expected to handle themselves with decorum during all meal times.
TRANSPORT
- For students on Clinical Placement in various places, they will be dropped and picked at stipulated times and punctuality must be observed to avoid any inconveniencies
- All students are expected to exercise reasonable care while using the School’s vehicles to avoid accidents
- Any damage of the vehicle will be surcharged to those concerned either individually or collectively
- Students are not allowed to flout traffic rules and highway codes when using School’s vehicles
- All students are required not to expose the SHS-MPSH vehicle to danger
- Provoking drivers or the public while using the vehicle is prohibited
- All students are required to report all cases of harassment in the process of securing or using the school’s vehicle to either the Transport Manager, Principal or Lecturer in charge of clinical rotation
- All transport matters/issues pertaining students shall be addressed through the respective Clinical Instructors, Class Lecturer or the Principal where need be
HEALTH CARE SERVICES
PREAMBLE
All new students shall undergo a thorough Medical Examination here at The M.P. Shah Hospital whose results must be recorded and shall bear the signature and stamp of the Examining Authority and which further must be availed to the School Administration during registration.
The doctor examining the student will use the form available at the Out-patient Department
ENTITLEMENT
The Hospital’s management shall handle emergency cases as appropriate. Where admission is required, we shall seek the guidance from the parent/guardian/significant other.
PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED
- All students shall have a medical file in the Hospital’s Outpatient Clinic and should report there for any emergency illness
- The student will notify the Principal of the intent to seek medical attention
- The Medical Personnel shall notify the School Administration of the outcome of the medical service sought
