STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE

STATEMENT OF INTENT

The School of Health Sciences M.P. Shah Hospital is committed to the training of high quality healthcare professionals who are ready to work in any challenging environment.

Our aim is to create delighted professionals by offering unchallenged training for students. We are committed to empowering our students to participate in decision-making and in the implementation of the schools policies. We shall continue to work closely with all the stakeholders that include the Government, Regulatory bodies, the society and suppliers to ensure provision of quality training

PREAMBLE

  1. The rules and regulations apply to students of SHS-MPSH. Students shall be required to observe and abide by the rules and regulations contained in this academic Handbook and Code of Conduct.
  2. The rules and regulations shall take effect and be binding upon every student of the school on admission, and so long as such a student remains so registered with the SHS-MPSH.
  3. Every student shall be required to read these rules and regulations and to sign the declaration and bond of good conduct certificates appended hereunder, that the contents and meaning hereof have been understood and shall be adhered to.
  4. Nothing in these rules and regulations shall preclude the school from requiring any student to execute any bond, assurance or undertaking to be of good conduct throughout his/her stay at the school.
  5. When required and executed, such bond, assurance or undertaking shall have the same effect as if it were part of these rules and regulations.

 

The school reserves the right to review and amend the contents of this code from time to time without prior notice, provided that such revisions will be communicated to the students body through issuance of the revised edition.

DEFINITION OF STUDENT

For purposes of these rules and regulations, the term student means and includes:

  1. Any person who has been registered into a programme of study duly and expressly recognised by the management of the School of Health Sciences M.P. Shah Hospital.
  2. Any student from another institution who is registered for a study Programme in the SHSMPSH.
  3. All students shall conduct themselves within and outside the institution in accordance with the highest standards of integrity, personal discipline, morality.

GENERAL CONDUCT OF STUDENTS

All students of SHS-MPSH are expected to uphold high moral and ethical values expected of them. Consequently all students shall conduct themselves within and outside the institution with the highest standards of integrity, personal discipline, morality and in particular shall:-

  • Comply with lawful instructions of the institution or duly authorised officer.
  • Not keep any offensive weapons within the school premises (e.g. knives, fire arms, explosives, inflammable liquids etc).
  • Honour the rights, freedom and privileges of other members of the institution or outside the School.
  • Not use, abuse or introduce intoxicating substances in or outside the institution.
  • Refrain from any conduct that might bring the school or any section or programme thereof into disrepute.
  • Avoid drunkenness or other anti-social behavior as would lead to the disturbance of other students, staff, the school community in general or members of the public.
  • Avoid such vices as covetousness, jealousy, pride, gossip, immodesty, slander, nepotism, profanity, vulgarity, sex outside marriage, cohabitation, etc.
  • Not unlawfully appropriate, misappropriate, use, misuse, steal, destroy, damage or alienate property of the school, a staff member, a fellow student, any other person or handle such property in a way that is or may be prejudicial to the school, a staff member, student or any other person.
  • Not display conduct either in language behaviour or writing which is obscene, disgusting, offensive or indecent to any staff member, fellow student or any other person.
  • Not knowingly make a false or erroneous statement to any staff member or intentionally provide materially, false information to anyone inside or outside the college about the institution.
  • Not willingly/refuse to return or compensate for borrowed items or money belonging to a staff member, a fellow student or any other person.
  • Not circulate, display, affix, distribute a banner, placard, notice, circular, letter or pamphlet on or in the school premises without official authorisation.
  • Not convene, organise or attend an assembly on or in the school premises without obtaining prior authorisation or consent from the relevant authority, or attend a gathering prohibited by the school
  • Not arrange, organise, instigate, hold or participate in a political or protest demonstration within the college or the immediate vicinity of the college premises.
  • Dress appropriately at all times in the School, when at clinical placements or when attending all school functions.
  • Conduct themselves in all public places with such demeanour and dignity as befits their status as scholars and educated citizens.
  • Desist from all acts of hooliganism, unruly or rowdy behaviour, fighting, assault, unreasonable or excessive noise or any other acts likely to cause a breach of the peace within or outside the college premises.
  • Body piercing and tattoos are NOT allowed.
Male students shall NOT have

• Dreadlocks

• Plaited hair

• Earrings

• Untucked shirts and sagging trousers

• Vests that show their bare chestswear them with a shirt on, unless such an activity that demands such dressing mode

• Hats/caps in classes and in offices since it is disrespectful to do so

• The belts should be simple and descent

Female students shall NOT wear

• Tumbo-cuts-exposing their belly and naval

• Bear backs–exposing their backs

• Miniskirts–any skirt that is above the knee line

• Skirts whose slits are above the knee line

• Nose rings and any other rings rather than earrings

• Excessive make-up and eye lash extensions

• Dresses with the neckline running down exposing their cleavage

• Hair-avoid multi-coloured braids (hair extensions in unnatural colours)

• Body tight trousers-wear wellfitting clothes

• See-through clothes

The following provisions shall apply with respect to the conduct of students within and outside the SHS-MPSH.

DISCIPLINE

At all times the student shall uphold the good standards and reputation of the school and in exercising his/her duties shall:-

  • Comply with the law of the country and institution’s policies.
  • Respect the customs and practices of Kenya and the rights of the Patients and other customers.
  • Not misuse student authority or office for personal or other gain.
  • Observe the professional standards and ethics prescribed in every profession.
  • Observe all the rules and regulations, which stipulate the company’s operations in order to maintain discipline and uphold the dignity and the image of the school and the hospital.
  • Always observe the confidentiality of the patient and the school/hospital information.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY

  • Students shall maintain high personal integrity, moral standards, and a sound reputation by observing the sentiments of the patients and the rules and regulations adopted by the School and the Hospital.
  • The code of conduct further provides for active participation in the process of setting, developing, and promoting the highest professional standards in Kenya and all over the world.

ADOPT BEST AND ETHICAL PRACTICES

TOWARDS THE SCHOOL AS AN ORGANISATION

Students MUST practice and observe the highest standards of performance by: –

  • Making proper use of resources available.
  • Regularly appraise own competence, acknowledge potential weaknesses and seek relevant advice.
  • Take every reasonable opportunity to improve professional capability.
  • Be objective and constructive when giving advice or guidance in own professional capacity.
  • Accept accountability for the actions of self.
  • Take account of the interest of others while pursuing his /her own activities.
  • Never maliciously injure the professional reputation or career prospects of others.
  • Be aware of and sensitive to the cultural environment within which one is working.
  • Demonstrate loyalty to the school by promoting the school’s interests and objectives.
  • Communicate effectively both within and outside the School/Hospital by being courteous to all customers and by providing accurate and timely information as authorised by the School/Hospital management and stipulated in the policy.
  • Make immediate and full declaration of any personal interests which may conflict with the interests of the School/Hospital.
  • Refrain from engaging in any activity which impairs one’s effectiveness as a student.

TOWARDS THE PATIENTS

  • Every student must recognise and respect the role of patients by giving them immediate and undivided attention.
  • Be trustworthy.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and competence.
  • Protect the interests and dignity of patient irrespective of gender, age, culture, religion or political inclination.
  • All students must at all times maintain appropriate professional boundaries in the relationships they have with patients.
  • All students must promote the team spirit in patient care by respecting the skills, expertise and contribution of other colleagues.
  • All students must communicate effectively and share knowledge, skills and expertise with other members of the team for the benefit of the patient.
  • Students must make sure that the health care record of the patient is properly and accurately documented.
  • Students must promote the interests of the patients by helping them gain access to health and social information and support that is relevant to their needs.
  • Students shall not disclose sensitive or confidential information to the press, public or any unauthorised persons.

TOWARDS COLLEAGUES

  • Strive to minimise misunderstandings and promote good relationships between all who study in the school to enhance team spirit.
  • Consult and communicate effectively with each other.
  • Take into account of the needs, challenges, ideas and suggestions of others.
  • Encourage the improved performance of each other by availing information and by training to exploit full potential for every learner.
  • Be concerned for each other’s health, safety and wellbeing whilst in the learning environment.
  • Observe and adhere to self-discipline as the best mode of discipline
  • Ensure that disciplinary or other corrective action is fair and respects the dignity of the individual.

TOWARDS THE SOCIETY/COMMUNITY

  • Recognise and honour the School’s obligations to its investors, employees, suppliers, customers, users, society and the community.
  • All students must at all times maintain appropriate professional boundaries in the relationships they have with all the staff members within the institution and all other clinical placement facilities.
  • Make the most effective use of all resources at one’s disposal for the benefit of the Hospital/School without detriment to the environment.
  • Avoid pollution and whenever safe or possible reprocess and recycle waste materials.
  • Make sure that one does not intentionally disseminate false or misleading information.
